Peripheral Vascular Surgery

Peripheral Vascular Surgery is a specialized field of surgery focused on treating diseases affecting the blood vessels outside the heart and brain, primarily in the legs, arms, and abdominal region. It is performed to restore proper blood circulation in cases of peripheral artery disease (PAD), aneurysms, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and chronic limb ischemia caused by narrowed or blocked arteries due to atherosclerosis.

Common procedures include bypass surgery, where a graft (either a vein from the patient or a synthetic tube) is used to reroute blood around a blocked artery, and angioplasty with stent placement, a minimally invasive procedure that opens narrowed vessels using a balloon and a metal stent. In severe cases, endarterectomy (removal of plaque from arteries) or embolectomy (removal of blood clots) may be performed to improve circulation.

Peripheral Vascular Surgery is crucial for preventing complications such as limb loss, stroke, and severe pain due to reduced blood flow. With advancements in minimally invasive techniques, many procedures now allow for faster recovery, reduced risk of complications, and improved long-term vascular health.
